How to add Google Analytics to your WordPress blog
Mary Warner of Morrison County Historical Society and Woo Woo Teacup fame asked me some time ago if you can add Google Analytics to your WordPress blog. The answer is “Yes, absolutely,” provided you have a blog that’s privately or self-hosted (i.e., not at WordPress.com.) Setting it up is pretty easy too, as long as you’re comfortable looking at a little code.
If you don’t have a Google Analytics account, you can create an account here. At the end of the sign-up process, you’ll be presented with some JavaScript that contains your site’s new tracking code. Copy and paste that code into a word or notepad document.
Got your code? Just hit “play”and I’ll walk you through the steps to add it to your blog.
After you’ve installed analytics, it will take a couple of hours to begin registering user activity on your site. So don’t worry if you notice that there isn’t data in your account right away; this doesn’t mean that you’ve installed it incorrectly.
There are also a number of plug-ins that you can also use to add the tracking code to your blog. I haven’t ever used one, and so can’t make a recommendation. If you have, feel free to make a recommendation by commenting on this post.
